(Del náhuatl: chil-apan; chili; chile; apan, río, en o sobre el agua: «río de los chiles» o «en el agua de chiles». Jeroglífico: un chile rojo [chili] sobre el signo apan. Ibarra [1932-43] dice: «chilar en el agua»).
