Flora.  Árbol. Ramillas en cruz. Hojas lineares agudas de 2-3.5 cm. Flor masculina en conillos de 12-14 mm, violáceos. Conos erguidos cilíndrico-oblongos, resinosos de 10-16 cm de longitud por 4-6 cm de ancho, con escamas cuneadas de 28-35 mm, redondeadas y erosidenticuladas, con brácteas (hojas modificadas que rodean la flor) salientes de punta triangular, aguda. Semillas cuneado-oblongas de 9-10 mm, con vesículas resiníferas. Madera ligera y poco durable. Se usa en la elaboración de papel.  Con frecuencia se le llama abeto al oyamel. 

Zona: Alvarado, Banderilla, Coatepec, Córdoba, Coscomatepec y, principalmente, en las zonas del Cofre de Perote y Pico de orizaa.
